WQS Event: Rusty Arica Pro Challenge

Smiles were everywhere. The atmosphere at the closing ceremony, without a doubt, conveyed how happy and thankful the participants were that the contest was such a resounding success. Everyone agreed that the quality of the waves coupled with the professionalism of the event organizers and staff made the contest one of the best. It was without surprise that everyone listened to Roberto Perdigao's (regional director of the ASP) promise that his organization would fully support the return of this contest in the coming years. Francisco Gana, general Organizer of the event and treasurer of the Surf Association of Arica, confirmed that they are going to continue to work towards world recognition of Arica's waves. "The surfers don't stop telling me this is the best contest they can remember," Gana said. "And such a feat pushes us to go forward for a long time."

After defeating Jay Davies in the quarterfinals and Manuel Selman in the semis, the Peruvian, Gabriel Villaran, beat out his fellow surfer from Peru, Alvaro Malpartida, for the championship. Governor Luis Rocafull Lopez, the highest authority in the regions of Arica and Parinacota, awarded Villaran the trophy and a check for $7,000. "I feel at home in Arica," a thankful Villaran said. "They've always received me and supported me with open arms. I feel sorry to not have been able to share this experience with my friend Ramon Navarro from Pichilemu." Villaran dedicated the win to his mom and all the Ariqueans. "We showed today that Chileans and Peruvians can be friends," Villaran said after the closing ceremony. Alvaro Malpartida (PER) turned in a second place performance and Manuel Selman (CHI) and Jason Torres (CRI) finished tied for third. Finally, Hawaiian Kyle Ramey walked away with $500 as winner of the Expression Session -- a 40-minute competition awarding the surfer with the best tube.

Yeomans Upsets Reynolds at the Nike 6.0 Lower Trestles 6-Star Prime

Rusty rider Nate Yeomans started Day 3 of the Nike 6.0 at Lower Trestles strong and finished even stronger, advancing into the final rounds on Saturday. Nate took down Travis Logie and Rob Machado, but he served his biggest upset by taking out ASP World Tour star Dane Reynolds in Round 16. Yeomans has been tearing up WQS events on the U.S. Mainland for years and with Lowers being a 6-Star Prime, the highest weight on the WQS scale, this result will play a significant role in Yeoman's 2009 campaign. Tune in tomorrow for Nate's quarter final heat against CJ Hobgood at 10:50 am.

Local Surfer Nate Yeomans Leads Top Seed In Round 2

nate-turn

Yesterday in day 2 of the 6.0 Lowers Trestle WQS 6 stars prime, Rusty rider Nate Yeomans of San Clemente put his local knowledge of Lower Trestles to good use when he destroyed a long righthand wall with several beyond-vertical blasts to post the day's highest single wave score of a 9.47 out of 10. The talented goofy-footer continued to dominate his heat when he bashed another impressive score and earned the day's highest heat total of 18.24 out of 20.

"I was actually positioning myself for the left because I saw everyone scrambling for the right and I was able to get underneath them," Yeomans said. "I knew it was going to be a nice right, and I was able to get a couple of good turns and it had a nice wall so I was able to ride it all the way through. I knew it was going to be a good score, so when I heard the 9-point-score, I was like, yeah, I like that!"

The San Clemente native is hoping that he can utilize his familiarity of the cobblestone reef to post a top result at the 6.0 Lowers Pro. Yeomans has had a successful competitive history at previous ASP WQS events at the location in past years and is out to capitalize on the contest's ASP 6-Star PRIME status to help his cause towards qualification for the ASP Dream Tour.

"I've yet to make the Final out here and I had a bad event here last year, but I made the Semifinals the two years before that," Yeomans said. "It's always been a good event for me and now that it's a 6-Star PRIME, it really counts for qualification for the World Tour. It's definitely one of everyone's favorite places to surf, so I'm glad that it's a 6-Star PRIME."

Newport Nate Wins Third Consecutive Oakley Newport Beach Pro!

nate-newport-win-again

Newport Beach, California (Sunday, September 21, 2008)

Nate Yeomans (San Clemente, CA), 27, has claimed his third consecutive event title with a big win at the 2008 Oakley Newport Beach Pro over fellow finalists Dillon Perillo (Malibu, CA), 18, Travis Mellem (San Clemente, CA), 23, and Micah Byrne (Huntington Beach, CA), 26, in clean two-to-three foot waves at Newport Beach's 56th Street.

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 2-Star event is the second of three stops on the 2008 Macy's California Trifecta Surf Series (an ASP North America Specialty Series), and Yeomans emphatic victory vaults the phenomenal goofy-footer into the lead heading into the third and final stop in Santa Cruz this October.

Yeomans, the two-time defending event champion and 2006 Macy's California Trifecta Surf Series Champion, wasted no time in this afternoon's final, picking off an excellent 8.50 out of a possible 10 for detonating on a roping lefthander in the opening minutes.

"I knew that all the other guys were ripping so I wasn't planning on leaving anything to chance out there," Yeomans said. "I got that pretty good left at the start and that set me up for the rest of the heat. Dillon (Perillo) was ripping everything that came his way, but I got a solid righthander about midway through and was able to throw a little backhand air and that sealed it for me."

Currently sitting No. 26 on the 2008 ASP WQS ratings, Yeomans will be looking to use the momentum from today's win as he continues his campaign to qualify for the prestigious ASP World Tour in 2009.

"I'm a little bit speechless after all this," Yeomans said. "Everyone is coming up to me and saying that no one has ever won a 'QS three years in a row and that kind of spins me out. It's great. I love this event and it's a great confidence boost heading into the rest of the year. My goal is to qualify for the ASP World Tour and I'm planning to do that in the next few months."
