Before the signing and party kicks off at the shop we are giving you a chance to head down to Salt Creek and try out the latest and greatest Rusty shred sleds during our Rusty surfboard demo. Look for the tent and flags down on the beach to come try out a new shape to get your rip on.

The first and only Pro Jr event of the year to be held on the North Shore went down this past week at Sunset Beach presented by North Shore Surf Shop, Rusty, and Da Hui. The crew of young competitors took to the stage with some legit Sunset bombs coming through each heat, making positioning and knowledge a huge factor.

At then end of the day it was San Clemente's Ian Crane who took the men's division win, and Moana Jones taking the win in the girls division. Another standout in the competition was Seth Moniz surfing well past his 15 years of age and gaining enough points to enter the 2013 season as the #1 rated Hawaiian jr.

The 2nd annual North Shore Surf Shop Pro Junior presented by Rusty and Da Hui officially gets underway today on Oahu's North Shore. The largest pro junior surfing competition in Hawaii’s history will run its first rounds of competition January 17, at Turtle Bay Resort, before moving to Sunset Beach January 18-26.

It will feature more than 100 of the top Under 21 surfers in the nation – male and female – as well as juniors from Europe, Japan and South America. Carrying a 3-Star Mens rating and a 2-Star Womens rating, the event will offer $18,000 in prize money for the competitors who take on Sunset.

Male competitors include defending champ Ezekiel Lau (Oahu), Oahu’s Eala Stewart, Kauai’s Kaimana Jaquias, California’s Coffin brothers, Costa Rica’s Carlos Muñoz, Peru’s Cristobal de Col, Italy’s Leonardo Fioravanti, Japan’s Takumi Yasui, and second generation names like Curren, Beschen, Moniz, McNamara, Sarlo, Aikau and Rothman.

Longtime North Shore pro surfer Liam McNamara is the event organizer and founder, and former ASP world #2 ranked Shane Beschen is the contest director. With solid surf on tap, Hawaii’s fleet of junior surfers are ready to take on the sport’s ultimate proving ground: Oahu’s North Shore and Sunset Beach.

The top 12 Punt Of The Year finalists have been announced, and the $10K winner will be crowned January 28th 2013 on Surfline.com. The P.O.T.Y. judges panel includes air pioneers Jason "Ratboy" Collins, Erin McHenry, as well as ASP world tour competitor Josh Kerr.

Who will win the $10K grand prize? Entries include mind melting airs from the likes of Albee Layer, Matt Meola, Kelly Slater, Alan Fendrich, Cory Lopez, John John Florence, and Gabriel Mendina. Congratulations to all the finalists, Check out their winning clips here

“Right from the start we planned to do it all by hand and not use any suppliers. We created everything from hand. Hand-dyed, hand-cut, hand-sewed, hand-stitched, hand-painted, handdetails. The main element which shined in our design was the fabric treatment. It’s a transfer process where you never really know the result you’ll get. We used our four-way dobby stretch fabric which is our performance fabric but we wanted to try and show it not looking so high-tech. We put it through a process of boiling, hand-painting, scrunching and saturating. Because the short was made local, we had to source materials local. A heavy-weight brass snap was sourced from a local boat shop.”

“I don’t think we could even price these trunks. That said, we could go down a limited-edition path, where we only make 200 trunks. We could dye the fabric locally and then construct it through our suppliers. Each trunk would come in a unique package and all would be one-of-a-kind through our hand-dyed treatment process. We would probably be looking at $150 apiece. Hoo! We could go down the avenue of mass-producing this trunk but its such a unique trunk it wouldn’t do it justice.”

“We were able to go through a design process without any real structure or limitations at all. It was a great way to work and build a lot of creative ideas which you don’t really get when you’re designing between retail and customer parameters.”
