Close to Home in Sri Lanka

Text and Photography: Brody

3 hours drive to Los Angeles. 17 hours from LA to Bangkok. 16 hour layover in Bangkok. 4 hours to Columbo, Sri Lanka. 10 hours drive across the country- seas of three wheeled moto-taxis (called tuk-tuks), cars, tractors pulling cartloads of people, herds of buffalo, and families on bicycles- all merging semi-seamlessly with a symphony of horn beeps and blares. Finally we had arrived, in what felt like the furthest I could possibly be from home.

For a few hours Sri Lanka seemed like another world. Different tastes, customs, rituals, and new waves to explore. We were lucky enough to pair up with the Arugam Bay Surf Club to have them show us a few waves around the region and on our first surf one of the local surfers busted out his beloved Rusty Surfboard! After all of that travel to get so far from home, our Rusty Surfboards were an instant conversation starter and the feeling of being "so far away" melted with the first exchange of waves.

The locals surfed with confidence and style- I was impressed and the feeling of a surf community in Arugam Bay is as present as any surf community I have been to. I let the locals try out my quad fin Slayer as well and they were really fired up on how fast it got going. Surfing with the locals in Sri Lanka is a lot like surfing with my friends at home, despite that sometimes there are elephants, buffalo, or Cobras on the beach. But they are "nice cobras" so it's ok.

It seems that no matter how far away from home I get, Rusty Surfboards are still a great way to start a conversation.

Featured are a few photos of the local Sri Lankan surfers shredding on Rusty Surfboards and a few other scenes one may encounter when searching for waves in Sri Lanka.

Kylie Loveland loves Trestles and Trestles loves her too

If Trestles is good, Kylie is out there. You can't miss her... she's the tiny blond girl on the Rusty board that surfs well beyond her years. She is no one trick pony either; she'll throw down a frontside carve with style and ease or attack the lip backside like a polished veteran, plus she's a contest machine. So if you're out surfing Trestles with your buddies and you find yourself paddle battling for waves with little Kylie, it's best to not even try because she'll make you look silly.

On the Road: Hunter Lysaught

Rusty Surfboards team rider, Hunter Lysaught, is pretty much living out of his board bag now-a-days. Good thing he knows what to pack at... with a 6'6" Traveler for camping in the tube, a custom 5'11" R-1 Shortboard with a thumb tail for when the waves are good- but not huge, and a 5'9" Jokerr for making the most out of groveling conditions, and a few pairs of boardies- Hunter is pretty set to tackle any situation that presents itself, whether it is competitions, free surfing, or just living. From Puerto, to England, to France, to Virginia... Hunter always has a one way ticket going somewhere to harness his skills. Free surfing on his 5'11":

Josh Kerr in J-Bay

Here's a little clip of Josh Kerr’s first few days in J’bay while waiting for the event to start and new swell to arrive.

Rusty Team at the NSSA’s

Just finished up with the NSSA nationals held at the Huntington Beach pier. Although we didn’t win any titles, we did have a Rusty rider in most of the top 4. Rick Takahashi placed 1st in Explore masters and 2 in Explorer Seniors. Barron surfed his heart out and won every heat, but when it came down to the finals the waves did not cooperate enough for him to get the scores he needed. Mahina made two finals but was also unlucky with wave selection.

Check out the Pictures here.
