UPCOMING ROUND OF 16 HEAT

Heat # 16: Nate Yeomans, Chris Waring

Officials have confirmed to KEY News that a 20-year-old student at UCSB has died of a shark attack at Surf Beach. He reportedly is from Orange County.

Vandenberg Public Information Officer Jeremy Eggers says he is not able to release the name of the student. He says the Santa Barbara County coroner's office is now investigating and will have to release the student's identity once family is notified.

An eyewitness at the scene called the KEY newsroom around 9:20 a.m. saying the victim "had his leg bitten off and lost too much blood." That source also told KEY News the victim was pulled to shore by a friend, but efforts to stop the bleeding were unsuccessful.

Officials at Vandenberg have closed Surf, Wall, and Minuteman beaches as a result. The beaches will be closed for a 72 hour period.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of this surfer.

Josh Kerr is a man possessed, throwing down the highest individual wave score for a fourth day in a row and advancing to the Quarterfinals at the 2010 Quiksilver Pro Portugal. With his stable of powerful turns and varied aerial maneuvers Josh Kerr has firmly positioned himself as the favorite to win the contest. Conditions are expected to remain similar tomorrow which will allow Kerrzy to use his full repertoire of progressive maneuvers.

"I noticed the judges were scoring high the maneuvers on the outside so my game plan was to do everything on the outside and not bother with the inside stuff. I stuck to the bigger ones and they seemed to have more power than the waves yesterday so stoked to be able to do a bottom turn." (laughs)

Josh surfs next in Heat 3 of the Quarterfinals against Marc Lacomare . The contest has an 1:30 AM PST call early tomorrow morning and will start will the first Quarterfinal. Click here to follow the contest live!
