New Pollution in Europe with Matt Beacham

Rusty team rider, Matt Beacham, is the host of Fuel TV's "New Pollution" and recently the show brought him to Europe to film for future episodes. The first stop was a town called Anglet in the South of France to meet up with a young up and coming surfer named Ramzi Boukhiam. Ramzi is originally from Morocco, speaks six languages, and is blowing up on the European grom scene. After filming and trading waves with Ramzi for a few days, it was off to Belgium to catch up with skateboarding prodigy, Axel Cruysberghs. This 15 year old has been dominating the European contests and beating skaters that have ten years on him. Recently at the European championships, he won both the street and half pipe divisions! Axel showed Matt around his local skate park and pulled just about every move in the book!

Keep your eyes on Fuel TV to catch some of the best young talent in action sports and more antics with Matt in upcoming episodes of New Pollution...

"I've tried almost all of Rusty's shortboard models and the "Predator" is the one that works for me. I found it to be the most responsive board to what I want to do on a wave, and it works well in the small stuff and when it starts pumping as well. I don't travel with many boards, to keep light, so the Predator is the only thruster shortboard I bring."

Checking in from Liberia

good-morning1Good morning West Africa...

It was not easy to get here: days of air travel, sketchy car rides, petty theives, corrupt officials, and poverty everywhere the eye can see. However, all of the hardships seemed to drift away and we were handsomely rewarded when we reached our isolated destination on the West coast of Africa. The McIntyre family, videographer Nic McLean, and myself have spent the last few weeks camping at the beach in front of one of the most perfect left hand point breaks I have ever seen. Each morning we have woke up to flawless lines of swell tapering off from around the point, some easily breaking for upwards of 350 yards... The only other surfers we have encountered are a few local groms who were a great reminder as to why we surf. These talented young individuals took to the water for the pure fun of surfing and leave all of their dilemmas and hard histories on the beach. This is a display of true escapism and an unparalleled portrayal of raw and untainted surfing talent. These local groms have not been schooled on the latest surf DVDs and top 44 riders, they just surf with the boards they have and the outcome is surfing in its purest form...

ben1Local stand out, Benjamin, going through his morning routine.

We have had an amazing time these last few weeks interacting with the people of Liberia and we definitely scored epic content for the next episode of "On Surfari"!  Keep your eyes posted on Rusty.com for some behind the scenes sneak peaks, slide shows, and board videos from Liberia.

All the Best...

Board Tales with Bird: Rusty’s Personal Stick

img_1876

"This is Rusty's personal board that I sold for him to a guy named Doug Jones. It is a board that he made for himself in the mid '90's. It is a full lengther, not giant though, about 9'0"... perfect for blacks and so forth. A lot of thickness as you would expect for the big man's board, running at 20 inches plus, three inches on the thickness, and fully dimensioned out to the rail, but again...the big man is big. I bought it because obviously it was his own personal board and it is just a really good representation of how Rusty can make boards for giants like himself and then scale them down to make boards for three year olds like my kid. He is so diverse in his shaping and he is so willing to do whatever somebody wants and then put his own personal Rusty flare to it. He is by far one of the most inspiring and influential shapers that I have ever worked with and I continually work with him today; I am honored to have the chance to do so. He is not only an excellent friend, but he is an all time shaper! This board is a piece of Rusty that I can have in my hand."

An all-star lineup of shapers, craftsman, designers, and manufacturers will take over San Diego for the third annual Del Mar Sacred Craft Surf Expo at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday, October 10th and 11th. The stellar list includes, but is not limited to, Bing Copeland, Peter St. Pierre, Mark Richards, John Cherry, Rusty Preisendorfer, Brian Hilbers, Matt Calvani, Reno Abellira, Pat Rawson, Joe Baguess, Firewire, John Kies, Gary Linden, Daniel Thompson, SurfTech, Robert August, Gary Hanel, Axxe Wetsuits, Tim Bessell, Stu Kenson, Quiksilver, Dennis Murphy, Bruce Jones, and Ricky Carroll. This year there will be a Tribute to the Masters Shape-off honoree, Dick Brewer .

The complete list of over 100 shapers and exhibitors is listed on the website - click here now!

Sacred Craft Surf Expo 2009 has something for everyone from board demo's to seminars to artwork to music. One of this years' main attraction is the Vintage Surfboard Antique Road Show event, taking place on Saturday October 10th from 10am - 1pm.

"We are urging surfers to dig through their garages, their storage space, and their backyards for collectible surfboards and magazines that they think may hold some real value," explained expo director Scott Bass. "Anything special and unique from say, 1985 or so and earlier, especially if it is in good shape, probably has value above and beyond normal used-board pricing. Our expert appraisers can determine a estimated value."

Special events are being planned around and during the Sacred Craft Expo weekend. First off, make sure to get down to 15th St. for the TransWorld Surf's Sacred Craft Magical Morning Board Demo. The general surfing public is invited to 15th St. reef in Del Mar on Saturday October 10th from 7am - 10am. Come on down and try out boards and wetsuits from Sacred Craft exhibitors. The Sacred Craft Surf Expo opens its doors immediately following the TransWorld Surf's Sacred Craft Magical Morning Board Demo.

You will want to be at the expo early! The first 100 attendees in the door will be put in a special "early bird" drawing for a brand new Firewire Fish Surfboard. Great odds! And no wonder, just a few doors down from the DM racetrack!

Musicians will play on the outdoors stage all weekend long. Various groups are scheduled including Australian longboard champion Beau Young, Miles Kinney, Tower 7, FiveAlive (a YardBirds cover band), the acoustic stylings of Kevin White, and Future Fins brand ambassador Phil 'Boo' Stubbs.

On Saturday Oct 10, make sure to stay around and check out a special Sacred Craft premier screening of the new Australian documentary film, "Searching for Michael Peterson."

Board Tales: Hamon vs. the Fishermen

076-angry-fisherman

"When I was a kid on the Gulf Coast of Texas the only real spots that you could surf were next to piers because the piers were the only places where the sand would form sand bars in the right way to surf. Unfortunately, the fisherman pretty much claimed the piers and the closer you would get the more angry they would get. So they started getting in the habit of casting at us; some of 'em would just throw led, some would throw led with hooks on it. Occasionally someone would get hit and and tension built up. One of the ways we would combat it is we devised a modification to the fin on our long boards. Essentially, we shaped a notch on the leading edge of the fin and foiled it really, really sharp so that as your riding the wave if you ran over a fishing line it would eventually cut the line and it worked pretty good! Usually when you run over a line you would hear it go 'bzzzzzz' and eventually it would go silent (when the line was cut). It took the fishermen a while to catch on and eventually they stopped casting at us and we stopped cutting their lines."

Questions to Rusty: If You Didn’t Shape, What Would You Be Doing?

scan00181

"Oh my gosh! I don't know!? Probably something in art or graphics...I really have a passion for fine art, painting and drawing and things like that and I really enjoy graphics too. In the early days of the company I did a lot of logo design and graphics for the t-shirts and a lot of the ads the first years. That is where I might have ended up...In the early eighties I was seriously considering shifting gears and working for a friend of mine who had a company that made PCs working in graphics and marketing. That would have been different!"
