Jamie Sterling Ventures Through the Midwest via Sea Plane

I just finished a week long adventure in the Midwest. I was flying all over the Great Lakes doing recon for a Red project called "New Wave". We utilized John Shoffner's Gunmen Albatross Red Bull branded Sea plane. I never knew the Great Lakes had waves. After flying  25.2hrs, and 3528 nautical miles I've come to the conclusion that the mid west has some nice setups for surfing. I've always been curious about the Great Lakes of North America. Some of the setups out on the vast Lakes looked like Tahitian reef passes. No the waves were not tubing like Teahupo'o but the water was crystal clear and the waves were rolling in with uniformity. We didn't expect to get waves on this trip. This first expedition purpose was to only look around and plot GPS coordinates. We did plenty of searching and scored a little out of season swell that I stand up paddled. The locals greeted us with open arms and welcomed us back anytime. The private flights on the Red Bull Albatross were mind blowing. Talk about a high end adventure. VIP….Thank you RED BULL!

I'll be coming back to the Great Lakes in the middle of winter on the next big Northeastern storm. Yes parts of the lake will be frozen and I'll be bundled up in snow gear. Why, because I live for the adventure and the water is fresh.

P.S. Water landing's rule! Its so smooth to land on a silky lake…John Shoffner thanks for flying the plane and making it a smooth flight!

Aloha,

Jamie Sterling

Rusty’s Annual Tavarua Get Away

_mg_4415

Every year Rusty spends time on Tavarua Island in Fiji, home of the infamous waves Cloud Break and Restaurants. Rusty will be spending five weeks on the island surfing, stand up paddling, fishing, and conducting some research and development on a few new board shapes...

_mg_8250

This years trip is off to an interesting start; the day Rusty showed up, Restaurants started filtering in a few sets and he wasted no time tackling the long left hander on his SUP.

_mg_7102

A few days into the trip Rusty put an end to the meager fishing season by reeling in a 200+ lbs. Black Marlin. After the initial ice breaking catch the ocean has come to life, providing yellow fin tuna and dorado daily.

However, it has not been all waves and fish... The island of Tavarua underwent an emergency evacuation due to a tsunami warning issued after an 8.8 earthquake hit Chile. Everyone on the island was rushed onto boats and sped over to the mainland where they headed for the hills. Rusty, the rest of the island guests, and the Fijians all hung out on top of a small mountain in an old World War II bunker hoping for minimal impact, but preparing for the worst. The tsunami was scheduled to strike Fiji at 10:04 am, but luckily the tidal wave never came...

Tavarua Island is full of surprises; keep your eyes on the Rusty Blog to see what the next couple of weeks has in store for Rusty...

Boardworks Announces New Paddle Sport Division, Rusty Signs On

picture-2

Boardworks announces a new Paddle Sport Division. "Stand Up Paddling has been among the bright spots at retail in a very tough market," said Boardworks' Bob Rief. Boardworks has "been there" since the beginning of the category with C4 Waterman, the "original SUP company" well known for its great products, world class watermen, website marketing and category leadership. We have watched SUP grow from a small "surf only" sport to one that encompasses the full spectrum of waterways around the world; surf to fitness, touring, rivers and lakes.

With C4 Waterman as the cornerstone, Boardworks has been dedicated to bringing the best and most innovative SUP products to market and providing retailers and consumers with the tools for success both on the retail floor and in the water.

With the newly created SUP Division, Boardworks continues its commitment to excellent products, outstanding service, support and is expanding its product line to include a collection of the best work from shapers and brands that are leaders in their categories. With that said, Boardworks is very proud to announce that Rusty has joined its family of shapers.

Rusty Preisendorfer and Boardworks' Mike Fox announce an agreement to manufacture and sell Rusty's SUP collection of boards. According to Fox, "This is a great day for us. We are flattered that Rusty has chosen us to introduce his collection of Stand Up Boards in our Thermal Epoxy Compression TEC construction. Our concept is to bring leading shapers and their brands into our Paddle Division, and I cannot think of a more notable or authentic brand than Rusty. We will have his SUP collection available at the January tradeshows and will be shipping to retail in early spring."

Rusty commented, "With 40 years of surfboard building and designing experience, the transition into building SUPs has been relatively easy and natural for me. I am an avid paddler and have been riding, designing, and building custom SUPs for several years, which has led to what I feel are some very user friendly and performance-oriented designs. I look forward to working with Boardworks...it will free me up to spend more time designing and testing while someone with a solid track record can help with manufacturing and distribution."

Boardworks Surf manufactures and distributes over 100 models of surfboards, SUPs, and paddle boards designed by some of the world's best shapers and brands including C4 Waterman, Rusty, Bill Stewart, Mike Hynson, Ben Aipa, Dewey Weber, Kane Garden and many others. Using our proprietary TEC (Thermal Epoxy Compression) construction Boardworks produces light and durable surfboards and SUPs with excellent flex and rebound characteristics for enhanced performance. Board of the Week: Stand Up Paddle

I've been building surfboards for 40 years. A couple of years ago I got the paddle bug. I had not really considered pursuing the SUP business but I've been having so much fun and I have so many friends that have asked for boards...

I am really all about custom boards. These are 3 models to use as a basic guideline. They are all shaped and glassed in San Diego. Primary construction is EPS core and Epoxy glassing. I also do composite work including various veneer skins, as seen with the bamboo veneer and carbon rails on the Free Glide.

Turn around time on a custom? You'll be pleasantly surprised.
