Breaking Through The Static from mike pagan on Vimeo.
After waking up today to a flat North Shore Rusty team riders Jay Davies, Jayke Sharp, Nate Yeomans and Marlon Gerber headed to the east side to hang out with Hawaiian grom Hunter Johnson. We met up with Hunter and his dad Ron who works and lives on the Kaneohe military base. Even though the North Shore was dead we tried out Hunter’s local surf spot and it turned out that his beach break had some fun wedgey waves. To get to his break you have to drive across this huge runway complete with every aircraft imaginable. The boys went for a surf and caught a couple fun little air sections. After the surf everyone went back to Hunter’s house for lunch - the Johnsons’ make some slammin corn bread and chili. Before the day was over Ron took us on a tour of the base - Ron’s a cool guy and always has a funny story from traveling in the military. Fun day…back tomorrow for round two

A couple weeks back the North Shore took on the South Shore for the pink slips of the boards in the Red Bull Rivals competition and here’s some video footage!

There was some insane talent competing this weekend at the Red Bulls Rival comp in Sandy Beach, HI. For those who don’t know what the comp is about, Rivals pits the best North Shore surfers against their South Shore counterparts in a one day event. Originally, the losing team had to give their boards to the winning team, but both team captains ended up donating all their team’s boards to charity. Jamie O’Brien, Kalani Robb, and the North Shore team put up a valiant effort but ending up losing to Keanu Asing, Kekoa Cazimero and the rest of the South Shore team.
Head on over to the Red Bull site for the full recap and more photos.

Red Bull Rivals is a one day surf event pitting Oahu’s legendary shores (North Shore and South Shore) against each other. Top Surfers from each shore will battle it out in a head-to-head surf competition for ultimate island bragging rights. To keep things fair, the event will be held on the Eastside of Oahu at Sandy Beach (Neutral Territory). No major surf event has been held at this popular surf hangout location since the Gotcha Pro back in the Early 1980s. Besides bragging rights, teams will compete for a territory advantage in next year’s competition and the losing team has to give the winning team their surfboards (similar to “racing for pink slips”).
Ten surfers for each team will be chosen by online voting and teams must include at least one female surfer and 2 groms (17 or under). A “ringer” will be allowed to be a part of each team and does not have to be disclosed until day of competition (this can be any surfer from anywhere in the world).
