NATE YEOMANS HAWAII BLOG

So Hawaii 08 is in full swing on the North Shore. I have been here for 2 weeks now, and my pasty white haole skin is gone with a solid Hawaiian bronze. I rocked up from flat Cali straight into a solid 10 foot west swell and firing Pipeline. Didn’t get too many waves out there, but just one is better than any wave you’ll ever catch back at home in San Clemente. Just yesterday I was out surfing Pupekea and there were sea turtles swimming everywhere. There was one turtle in particular that was huge, definitely the biggest turtle I have ever seen. So I figured I would swim down and check him out. As I swam down and was getting closer to him, I thought, I wonder if you could grab on the back of him and let him pull you around. Like the stuff you see in the movies. But unfortunately there is a reason you only see this in the movies. It happened so quickly I didn’t have time to clear the area……….. and since I was directly behind him I was an easy target All of the sudden a brown cloud filled the once crystal clear water. Wait whats going on, why is the water all of the sudden brown. Then it hit me. I couldn’t believe it, I just got crapped on by a turtle… As he swam away, I think I heard him say,” welcome to Hawaii haole now go home.”

Nathan Yeomans Wins Third Consecutive Oakley Newport Beach Pro

NEWPORT BEACH, California (Sunday, September 21, 2008) – Nathan Yeomans (San Clemente, CA), 27, has claimed his third consecutive event title with a big win at the 2008 Oakley Newport Beach Pro over fellow finalists Dillon Perillo (Malibu, CA), 18, Travis Mellem (San Clemente, CA), 23, and Micah Byrne (Huntington Beach, CA), 26, in clean two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at Newport Beach’s 56th Street.

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 2-Star event is the second of three stops on the 2008 Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series (an ASP North America Specialty Series), and Yeomans’ emphatic victory vaults the phenomenal goofy-footer into the lead heading intp the third and final stop in Santa Cruz this October.

Yeomans, the two-time defending event champion and 2006 Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series Champion, wasted no time in this afternoon’s Final, picking off an excellent 8.50 out of a possible 10 for detonating on a roping lefthander in the opening minutes.

“I knew that all the other guys were ripping so I wasn’t planning on leaving anything to chance out there,” Yeomans said. “I got that pretty good left at the start and that set me up for the rest of the heat. Dillon (Perillo) was ripping everything that came his way, but I got a solid righthander about midway through and was able to throw a little backhand air and that sealed it for me.”

Currently sitting No. 26 on the 2008 ASP WQS ratings, Yeomans will be looking to use the momentum from today’s win as he continues his campaign to qualify for the prestigious ASP World Tour in 2009.

“I’m a little bit speechless after all this,” Yeomans said. “Everyone is coming up to me and saying that no one has ever won a ’QS three years in a row and that kind of spins me out. It’s great. I love this event and it’s a great confidence boost heading into the rest of the year. My goal is to qualify for the ASP World Tour and I’m planning to do that in the next few months.”

Yeomans goes for the Hat Trick!

Rusty team rider, Nate Yeomans (San Clemente, CA), is currently the two-time defending Oakley Newport Beach Pro Champion and he also won the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series in 2006. Nate advanced into the semi-finals with ease, moving one step closer to clinching his third consecutive win at Newport!

“The conditions were pretty fun out there and I’m stoked to keep moving forward in the event,” Yeomans said. “I would love to win three in a row out here, but obviously, the No. 1 goal is to qualify for the ASP World Tour. I’m sitting in the 20’s right now on the ASP WQS and I’m looking to bust my way in before the season is finished.”

Nate’s warmup air psyches competitors

Check this massive tweaked out air by Nate Yeomans. Getting in a little warmup surf before his heat in the Oakley Newport Beach Pro at 56th St this morning, Nate flew down the line in the fun wedges on the other side of the jetty from the event and, with all heads watching busted this monster air, landing it with ease. Nate ripped his opening heat in the WQS 2 star, winning and moving into round 5.

Yeomans and Team USA bring it home

By Nate Yeomans

Well although I did badly in the contest here in Hossegor ,it ended up being a really fun contest. Yesterday, which was the last day of the contest, they had a specialty event called the eco challenge. It was a tag team contest with each country having a team. It was made up of our team, USA ( Me, Pat, Tanner, and Dane Gudauskas), Team Brazil, South Africa, Australia, and Europe. They have boards that are all made from recycled and non-toxic materials that you have to ride. You don’t get to choose which one you want to ride they just give 2 boards to each team. They give you 40 minutes and each guy on the team can ride up to 3 waves and they keep your one top-scoring ride. All 4 guys on the team have to be back in the dugout before the 40 minutes are up or you team gets deducted points off their total.
I was the first one to go out for our team.  I ran out and as soon as I hit the water I realized that the board I was riding felt way to thick. I got a pretty good ride out the back all the way to the shore and got a 6.0. Of course when you’re out there all the teams are talking crap on the other teams. Next was Big Dane dawg. He ended up getting a 7.3. At this point we were a little behind to some of the other teams. but that was all going to change soon. Pat, aka MOB, paddled out straight into a bomb right that looked like a perfect wave at lowers. He ended up crushing the thing all the way through. He also never rode the board before this wave but you would have never thought that by how he surfed it. Our team went wild on the beach.  He was also the double whammy, so whatever wave he got was going to get doubled.  ” Here comes the scores from the last wave for team USA, and they are going to like it.  It’s a 9.8″‘the announcer says.  I think after that came through no one on our team had a voice left from screaming so loud.  The last surfer for our team was the man child. Tanner didn’t have much time left so he caught a smaller wave on the inside. They never did announce his score but, because of his good tactics we were the only team to have all our guys in the box before the time ran out.  We ended up actually smashing the other teams, and of course had bragging rights for the rest of the day.
We got to go up on stage with the finalist from the normal contest. Which was Chris Davidson, the winner and Jihad Kohdr who placed second. The beach was packed when we took the winner’s podium. We are in France in the middle of summer so clothing is optional and they take full advantage of that option. Which isn’t always a good thing especially if they’re over 60 and weigh 300 pounds or more.  Before we came up they started the theme song from Rocky Balboa. We got sprayed down from beer and awarded $2000 bucks from booger man. Who was dressed in all green Spandex with this crazy helmet on. He had about the biggest bulge I think I have ever scene. To say the least he was very well hung.  Dane dawg graced us all with a sick speech about absolutely nothing but it didn’t matter because no one there understood it anyways.  The after party was at the contest and we proceeded to tear the place down and do the US of A proud…… yewwwwwwww

BEHIND THE QS GRIND WITH NATE YEOMANS

So two days ago I was scheduled to leave LAX (Los Angeles) to Frankfurt Germany, and then to France. First off, we got dropped off at the wrong terminal and had to walk 4 terminals down to check in. I go to check in at first class( one of the perks of constantly traveling). “We dont take surf boards here you have to take them to the other terminal,” the lady barked at me. So I started walking again. Finally I get everything checked in and then comes security. A heads up for anyone traveling, you want to get there plenty early because security now a days takes forever. I get to the gate and they are calling my name over the loud speaker. I figure something else has gone wrong. But to my surprise everything was fine and I was actually getting upgraded to first class, Alright!!!!!!.

So I boarded the plane. We sit there for a while and the captian says over the loud speaker, ” we are having some mechinical issues and we’re trying to get them fixed.” So we have a while until we are going to take off. About an hour passes and all of the sudden I hear a bunch of yelling coming from the back of the plane. I look back and there is a full on fight going on. 2 young Italian guys fighting this huge German guy. The captain goes running back and with a couple other guys breaks it up. Then comes the cops, and they end up arresting the 2 young Italian guys.

I’m now finally in Frankfurt, and waiting for the flight to France. Im hoping all this means that its time for my luck to turn around and win the contest this week in Lacanau. I will keep you posted on any more pissed off German’s, (don’t mess with Germans when they’re pissed) How much coffee I drink and how fat Im going to get from all the bread and cheese over in France. And of course how good the wine is……. Mercy. n8
