The ESA Championships just kicked off in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Though the conditions weren't the best, overcast and windy with chest high waves, the surf is supposed to pick up on Wednesday when the grom divisions start up. Check out this photo gallery from Transworld Surf of the first day of the comp. Look out for Rusty's Corey Howell and check back to see how he fares against his fellow East Coast rippers!

Although the morning's glassy conditions were eventually chopped up by a southerly afternoon breeze, hundreds of surfers competed in 23 divisions for a chance to surf in the NSSA National Championships in June in California.
"I was a little worried about waves on my way here," said NSSA Executive Director Janice Aragon, who drove a truck and trailer full of scaffolding and equipment from California last week. "So I couldn't believe Friday was the day this swell arrived. And once the wind died this morning, it was so clean. You don't see Sebastian Inlet like this very often."
Those glassy conditions gave contestants from Florida to Maine the opportunity to showcase their skills over four days.

St. Augustine, Florida's wonder grom Keto Burns finished up with a boys 1st place and open mens 6th place for the ESA Championships held in the outer banks of North Carolina. After a week of battling 50 mph plus winds in heats and amping competitors Keto was rewarded with fun head high surf and pumping barrels in his final. Now that Keto is done with this event he will be in Costa Rica for the next 2 weeks.

The East coast premiere of Rusty's new release "Changes" will coincide with the largest amateur surf event in the world. Sunburned, frothing groms will invade a basketball gym in Buxton, North Carolina on Tuesday, September 23rd, and if I were a betting man, I'd wager these guys will paddle out for a full moon shred fest after seeing our boys busting air after air. Check back after the premiere for a full photo gallery of the event.
We'd like to thank our friends at ESA, Transworld Surf, Sanuk, and Freestyle for helping this go off.
