Rusty Goes Huge for Charity at The Art of Shaping Event!

The Art of Shaping event was held over the weekend and hundreds of years of shaping experience congregated under one roof to raise money for charity. The legendary shapers of San Diego were given $600 each to shape a unique board to be auctioned off; however, most of the shapers spent way more than $600 to build their boards. Rusty went huge when he found himself in a bidding war over a one of kind surfboard built by Jim Phillips...Rusty wound up donating $8,000 to charity to win this board! The Art of Shaping: Rusty’s Agave Gun

The "Billabong Art of Shaping Event" will be taking place September 10th - 11th at ASR in San Diego and Rusty is one of the coveted San Diego shapers that has been invited to create a board for this event...

The concept of the "Billabong Art of Shaping Event" is simple: it is a venue to showcase the talent of San Diego surfboard shapers and craftsmen by allowing them to build boards that highlight their particular contribution or influence on the evolution of the surfboard over a particular span in time. Shapers are invited and encouraged to "create a board representing the era, style, or shape they are best known for or relate to," or simply whatever best motivates their creativity and talent.

A few notes from Rusty about the board he custom built for the event:

-8'0" 201/4" by 2 7/8"

-Round pin single fin, similar to what I would have ridden at good double overhead Blacks in the mid to late 70's, perhaps modernized a little.

-Agave is a local San Diego wood. Larry Fuller helped assemble the blank.

-John Cherry fin.

-The glassing was done by Diamond.

Kudos to all for the help. I hope it's new owner waxes it up and takes it for a spin!

Enjoy,
R.

Random Acts of Art at ASR

So you've heard all about it, the cherry on top of this promotion was the fact that Scion agreed to wrap a Scion xB in white vinyl, put it on the show floor at ASR in San Diego, and let a hand picked team of artists go for a freehand free for all. Friday morning our crew rolled up and found the car behind velvet ropes, and right in front of exhibitor registration. Surrounded by an amazing display of art covered Rusty Surfboards, compliments of the 10 selected winners in Rusty, Scion and 94.9 FM SD's Random Acts of Art competition, the artists started sketching what would become an amazing one of a kind rolling piece of art. Bird from South Coast Surf Shop, who does the surf report for 94.9 FM SD, is actually going to be doing the surf report in this car and after stopping by to check it out he said had some big plans with it. Thanks to all for helping this happen.

This exhibition represents a collaboration between Rusty Apparel and Surfboards, Scion and San Diego radio station KBZT(FM 94/9), Random Acts of Art is an art design competition coupled with the Ultimate Surf Ride giveaway. This three-way partnership encourages lifestyle enthusiasts to intimately connect music, art and board-riding by soliciting up-and-coming and seasoned graphic artists to showcase their talent by customizing a Rusty Surfboard.

Graphic artists were solicited from a barrage of radio ads, national email data base blasts and national on-line banner ads.

10 surfboards were selected out of hundreds of submissions by a committee comprised of representatives from Rusty's art and marketing dept's, as well as representatives from Scion and KBZT (FM 94/9). These 10 surfboards will then be given away at Scion dealerships to FM 94/9 listeners as part of the Ultimate Surf Ride promotion.
