Them Crooked Vultures
Take 1/4 of Led Zeppelin, 1/3 of Nirvana, and 1/4 of Queens of the Stone Age and you have one of the most talented power trios in rock history. This band of course is Them Crooked Vultures, composed of legendary bassist/organist John Paul Jones, drummer Dave Grohl, and singer/guitarist Josh Homme. Freed from the confines of the recording studio, Them Crooked Vultures turned tracks from their new self titled album into all out jam sessions and they put on one of the best performances from the entire festival. John Paul Jones may be 64 years old, but that man can lay down one funky bass groove and is still a master of the keys! Watch this jamming clip of "Gunman."
Jay Z
Headlining the first night of the concert, Brooklyn born rapper Jay Z ended the first day with an all time performance. The main stage was packed to the gills with everyone dancing and going off while listening to his distinct brand of east coast hip hop. Here's a clip of his frickin' smoking rendition of "99 Problems."
Coheed and Cambria
Alternative progressive rockers Coheed and Cambria put on a solid set comprised of new songs off their new album "Year of the Black Rainbow" and some old favorites. While Claudio Sanchez's vocals may be an acquired taste, no one can deny the titan of track known as Welcome Home, performed here with the USC Band.
Faith No More
Reformed after more than a decade away from the limelight, Faith No More is back with a vengeance and they ripped through a killer setlist playing crowd pleasers such as "Epic" and "Midlife Crisis." Vocalist Mike Patton is still as crazy as ever, crowd surfing during the end of "Ben." Also, enjoy the clip of "From Out of Nowhere."
Muse
With a mind blowing laser show, pyro, multiple piano/guitar/bass solos, and a perfectly paced setlist English space pop rockers Muse stole the show. They brought down the house with lively performances of "Hysteria," "Knights of Cydonia," and "Unnatural Selection." They even played the National Anthem! Rock out to these sick clips of the band.
Gorillaz
Closing out the entire concert, Gorillaz should have the highlight of the entire weekend and it certainly seemed like it when a video intro of Snoop Dogg appeared on the gigantic monitor. However, Snoop Dogg never appeared in the flesh on stage and his vocals were simply a digital recording. Not cool. This was the case with all the guest rappers on the various Gorillaz tracks. At least Punchy crowd surfed during the entire set!
